MAYOR of Barnsley Coun Mick Stowe made a special visit to a weekly drop-in session for military veterans to learn more about the charity’s services.

Help 4 Homeless Veterans, based in Royston, welcomed the mayor lrecently.

He chatted with regular visitors and listened to the stories they had to tell.

Steve Bentham-Bates, chief executive of the charity, said: “We basically sat down, had a cuppa and chatted for an hour-and-a-half.

“He was so impressed with our facilities he has already booked to have a bacon butty after the Remembrance Sunday parade on November 12.”

The charity host weekly drop-ins on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am to 2pm – they are open to all veterans and are free.

Steve added: “We’re trying to help combat isolation.

“A lot of older veterans don’t talk to anyone from one day to the next.

“There’s always good banter here and people feel comfortable.”
