A DEMENTIA support group will receive a share of £250,000 having been successful in a bid for national funding.

Julie Brown, founder of Barnsley Butterflies Dementia Support and Activities Group which has been running for nine years told the Chronicle the cash from The People’s Projects will secure its long-term future.

“We were told that we’d be successful last Wednesday but couldn’t make it public until the Thursday,” she said.

“It came as a real shock we’ve won a few awards previously but nothing like this has ever happened so it’s really amazing.

“We’ll be hosting a celebration party tomorrow at East Dene Working Men’s Club on Doncaster Road, to celebrate the hard work that has been put in by everyone involved in this organisation.”

After having the voting figures revealed, Butterflies came third out of the full country and came first out of the five groups within the Yorkshire region.

Julie added: “We’ve not stopped celebrating since we were named the winners it’s just amazing, the money will help us fund a lot of activities.

“We have entertainers every week so as you can imagine it isn’t cheap.

“But on top of that, the money will go towards funding day trips and the general upkeep of what we do here at Butterflies.”
