A GROUP of grannies looking to raise £1,000 for Barnsley Hospice were thrilled to get closer to their target after an auction of pork pies brought in £120.

The group get together every Thursday at the Heaven and Ale pub on Agnes Road in the town centre from 1pm as part of a social afternoon.

Judith Holling, 75, of Dodworth, has worked as a volunteer for the hospice for more than two years and, after she raised thousands for the charity, was nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.

She’s still trying to raise funds for the hospice with the group – and they’re now almost three quarters of the way there.

She said: “We’ve been getting together to try and get £1,000 for the hospice – we’re at £733 right now.

“The landlords at the pub auctioned off pork pies and managed to raise £120 from them which was fantastic.

“It’s a great and social afternoon and it gets people out of the house.”
