A WOMAN who stole thousands of pounds whilst working as an accountant in Barnsley has been handed a suspended prison sentence.

Joanne Sagar, 44, from Knottingley, stole £27,350 over 18 months whilst working at solicitors Howard and Co.

The thefts took place between December 2019 and January 2021 while Sagar was employed at the company.

Sagar was responsible for matters such as payroll at the company and was one of only two people with access to the accounts information.

The judge was told how Sagar was in an abusive relationship at the time and felt an expectation to bring in more money than she could afford.

She was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday for eight months in prison, suspended for two years.
