THE founder of Barnsley’s successful Neighbourhood Watch scheme who helped communities combat crime for 40 years has died.

John Hallows, 86, formerly of Riber Avenue, Athersley South, oversaw the formation of multiple groups in communities across Barnsley and was a well-known face due to his efforts.

He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 2016 for voluntary service to law and order.

He died at Lindhurst Lodge, a care home in his home village, on November 1.

A statement from the Barnsley Neighbourhood Watch Liaison Group said: “John was a founding member and chairman for 40 years.

“Our thoughts go out to John’s family.

“He was involved in setting up Neighbourhood Watch schemes both in Barnsley and right across the country.

“His commitment to his community and to the safety and security of others was unparalleled.”

John’s funeral will take place at St Helen’s Church, Athersley, on November 27 at 10.45am.
