WOMBWELL Operatic Society are celebrating their 90th anniversary with a special show this month.

The society, whose base is on George Street, started in 1933 and is the only club in the area to have its own theatre and be completely self-supporting.

Their show, 90 not out, will be performed at the George Street Theatre on September 27, 28 and 29.

Jo Owen, a member of the group, said: “We’ve been doing shows every year since 1933 – apart from during Covid and the war.

“To celebrate our 90th anniversary the show will contain songs from performances that we’ve done over the year.

“From the society’s very first show, The Mikado, through to Sister Act and Chicago there will be lots to enjoy.

“The members of the youth group of the society are also involved and will be doing their own songs from Annie and Bugsy Malone.

“The pandemic has had a disastrous effect on many societies which has resulted in their closure but Wombwell is still in existence hence the name ‘90 not out’.”
