SOUTH Yorkshire Police has released information to help drivers to pass horses safely.
The information is released in support of of Road Safety Week which ran throughout this week.
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “Going a few miles per hour over the speed limit can have a devastating and sometimes fatal impact on those involved in a collision; this also goes for our four-legged friends who we share the road with.
“Although each rider will know their horse’s temperament, it is important to remember that they are prey animals and their response to danger is to flight.
“No matter how well trained a horse is, they can still be unpredictable. Let’s all help to protect each other, horses and riders, as well as drivers.”
If you see a horse on the road, drivers are urged to:
-
Slow down to 15mph or less
-
Be patient
-
Pass the horse wide and slow
-
Drive away slowly
