BARNSLEY has been named as the cheapest place in Yorkshire to buy a house, figures show.

The study was conducted by insurance comparison site, Go Compare, which showed that the average price for a home in the borough is £135,118.

Prices for housing range from £160,000 in Bradford to £299,000 in York.

The study also revealed that the average salary required to buy, and comfortably live in, a flat in Barnsley is £13,300 with the salary for a detached home is £34,563.

Homes in the North of England were found to be the cheapest, with prices almost doubling in the South.
