POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist died in a crash in Barnsley.

At around 1.30pm on Saturday afternoon a bike travelling from High Hoyland, and a blue VW Golf travelling in the opposite direction, were in collision on New Road, just after the junction with Jewett House Lane.

A man, 48, from the Wakefield area riding the bike was taken to hospital with serious injuries but died shortly afterwards.

His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A 26-year-old woman driving the Golf was not injured.

As officers continue with their enquiries they are asking anyone who saw what happened to contact them.

They would also like to hear from anyone with dashcam footage, who saw the cyclist prior to the collision or the manner of driving of the Golf. Call 101 quoting incident number 473 of June 29.
