EVENING buses are returning to a village – months after Stagecoach pulled the service due to antisocial behaviour.
In October 2022, Stagecoach suspended all services running into the Thurnscoe area after 5pm after missiles were thrown at passing buses.
Following a six-month hiatus, the bus operator working alongside South Yorkshire Police brought back the service to Thurnscoe in a ‘trial period’ in May. However, they said at the time the service would be stopped again should antisocial behaviour continue.
Stagecoach confirmed in September that the bus service wouldl no longer be running with a decision to suspend the service ‘indefinitely’ announced – angering local councillors and residents.
This prompted the three Dearne North councillors Wendy Cain, Martin Morrell and Sue Bellamy to call for a return to evening services – and their calls were finally answered by the firm last week and buses will return to the area after 5pm.
Coun Cain said: “I am pleased that Stagecoach Yorkshire are finally returning to provide Thurnscoe with a bus service after 5pm, following a campaign from ward councillors. For too long our area has been isolated from public transport in the evenings, despite other places in South Yorkshire having higher levels of antisocial behaviour. Our community always deserved better.”
