A BARNSLEY College tutor is campaigning to get younger people to vote in the upcoming local elections.
Steven Burkinshaw, 27, from Kingstone, has been chosen as the Conservative candidate for the Dodworth ward in May’s local elections.
He’s taught at Barnsley College’s Honeywell campus for the last four years – and he says he wants young people to understand how important local government is to their daily lives.
He said: “I’m looking to listen to young people.
“A lot of politicians from major parties tend to aim towards the older generation.
“I’m aiming to reach out to young people and see what they want.
“One of the things I see as a teacher is that students don’t understand how important local government is.
“It doesn’t matter who you vote for – it’s just important that you do vote.”
