A BARNSLEY man has been forced to hand over more than £4,500 to the judicial system after it was proved it was ‘more likely than not’ that the cash was illegal or going to be used illegally.

Matthew Gray, 30, of Spark Lane in Mapplewell, was the subject of a South Yorkshire Police cash forfeiture order – and was forced to hand over £4,650 on November 28.

Forfeiture is a civil matter, which means that the court can only order the cash to be forfeited (handed over to the court) if it is proved that it was ‘more likely than not’ that the cash was illegal or going to be used illegally.

More than £13,000 has been paid back to the criminal justice system in November.
