A LOCAL football competition revealed only one winner - Barnsley Hospital Charity who left with a total of £1,322 raised from the day.
The match came after a year of banter between the two generations of teams at the New Lodge Working Men’s Club, who had been constantly arguing about which was better.
Brian Wilkinson, 67, from Athersley, and 29-year-old Carl Smith from Royston finally put an end to the debate on August 13 as the ‘young ones’ and ‘over 50s’ faced off.
The young ones took a spectacular lead - winning 10-4 - however both teams left the event happy for having being able to raise money for the Barnsley Hospital Charity.
Alan Swallow, 62, won man of the match and special thanks were given to referee Danny Willey and Paul Wordsworth for all their help in supplying equipment
Jane Mills, from the charity, said: “It was a pleasure to meet Brian and Carl and some of the members involved.
“It was great to see the generations coming together, the fantastic camaraderie and community spirit and everyone having a good time and raising funds for patients of all ages at Barnsley Hospital.”
