COMMEMORATIVE plaques at the Barnsley Pals memorial have been removed by the council following an act of vandalism.
The Barnsley Pals light installation on Churchfields is an award-winning piece of artwork, celebrated for its innovation and community engagement, involving local families and children.
Thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused to the memorial following an act of vandalism – prompting the council to remove all the plaques whilst they are fully refurbished.
Coun Robert Frost, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: ”We have had to remove the plaques at the Barnsley Pals memorial after a number of panels were broken and lighting was damaged due to mindless vandalism that took place a few months ago.
“This was extremely disappointing and frustrating, particularly as this installation was placed in memorial of those from Barnsley who lost their lives on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
“We are now working to refurbish and replace the plaques which will be re-installed shortly.”
