PLANS to provide an accommodation unit specifically for teenagers experiencing homelessness in Barnsley are set to be approved next week.

The proposal will provide a place for 16 and 17 year olds experiencing homelessness as a result of substance misuse, poor mental and physical health, contact with the criminal justice system or domestic violence or abuse.

A report to Barnsley Council’s ruling cabinet said demand for accommodation is high - almost 500 young people contacted the council’s housing team for help with homelessness during the 12 months up to March 2022.

The report said: “Young people aged 16 and 17 have a particular challenge, as they cannot legally hold a tenancy without a guarantor until they reach 18.”
