BARNSLEY has an ageing population as the proportion of over-65s living in the town rose over the last decade.

The census takes places every ten years, with the latest snapshot taking place last March.

Figures show there were 47,700 people aged 65 and over - up from 40,010 in 2011.

It means the proportion of over-65s living in Barnsley rose from 17.3 per cent to 19.5 per cent over the last decade.
