BARNSLEY Council is warning residents after they received reports of bogus phone calls impersonating them.

The fraudsters have been asking residents to sponsor books in Barnsley’s schools, wanting donations and bank details over the phone.

A spokesperson for the council said: “This is a scam, and you should never give out personal information or bank details over the phone.

“Please be cautious and listen to your instincts don’t be afraid to hang up on a caller or delete an email or text message.

“If you’ve received a suspicious text, email or phone call, or you think you’ve been scammed, you can report it to Action Fraud.

“Call 0300 1123 2040 or visit: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk.

“You should also contact your bank if you think you’ve been scammed.”
