SOUTH Yorkshire Police are on the hunt for a new horse to join their mounted unit in Barnsley.

The police are keen to hear from anyone who thinks they have the right horse to join the current team of nine based at Ring Farm in Cudworth.

A spokesperson added: “Our horses are a huge part of policing family and receive the highest level of care, and love from our officers and grooms.

“The horse needs to be a heavy, or crossed with a heavy breed (Irish Draft, Shire, Clydesdale), a gelding, aged between four and eight years, 17hh and above, and be able to pass a five star vetting process.

“Due to the challenging role of a working horse, he must be quiet in nature, not phased by situations and bombproof in traffic.

“The owner must be willing to allow the horse to come on a four-week trial before purchasing.”
