A LOCAL MP has created a petition to stop changes to prescriptions for people aged between 60 and 65.

Prescriptions are currently free for people aged over 60 in England, but planned changes next month will mean they will cost £9.35 per item.

John Healey, MP for Wentworth and Dearne, estimates this will effect more than 28,000 people in Barnsley.

He said: “This could then have a knock-on effect of increased hospital admissions including A and E visits and GP appointments causing additional costs and adding extra strain to the NHS and social care services.

“No one should be forced to choose between paying for their prescription and risking their lives.”
