RESIDENTS across the borough could be offered cash to upgrade their boilers from gas to heat pumps as part of a nation-wide scheme.

The incentive hopes to encourage residents to make the change to help reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels.

Households are now being offered up-to £5,000 to replace their gas boiler as part of a £3.9 billion scheme to cut carbon over the next three years.

It is hoped that no new gas boilers will be sold by 2035.

The grants will be available from next April and ministers hope the money will make the heat pumps a comparable price to a new gas boiler.
