BARNSLEY Council is asking residents to remain wary of fraudsters trying to use a census scam.
The scammers are using text messages to threaten people with a £1,000 fine for late or incorrect completion of the census.
A spokesperson for the council said: “Census will never contact someone by text in relation to the census unless you’ve texted them – their responses will come from 86677.
“Scam text messages can be forwarded to 7726 and scam emails to report@phishing.gov.uk.”
