A BARNSLEY MP has backed a town centre initiative tackling social isolation in older men across the borough.

Stephanie Peacock, MP for Barnsley East, visited Men in Sheds, a project where older men are encouraged to come together to make or repair things, share skills, have a laugh together and support each other.

The site in the town centre, which Stephanie visited, is partly supported by National Lottery funding, and runs a range of activities for older men, who run the centre themselves with support from Age UK Barnsley.

Stephanie said: “It was good to visit the Age UK Men in Sheds service in Barnsley, and chat to volunteers and local people who use the service.

“Age UK does such important work to support older residents here in Barnsley.

“With elderly people at greater risk of loneliness, and with this only made worse by Covid-19 shielding and lockdown measures, the work of Age UK is more important now than ever.”
