A LOCAL man who has been sending flowers to people across the borough to lift spirits has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.
Luke Callaghan, 25, of Grange Road in Brierley, works as a porter at Barnsley Hospital but in his spare time has been trying to brighten the lives of those around him by delivering flowers to loved ones.
He said: “I buy these flowers out of my own money to send to those in lockdown that are unable to see their loved ones.
“I thought it would be a really nice thing to do as people are getting depressed with the lockdown situation and so when they get the flowers it puts a smile on their face.
“I’ve sent about 35 bunches of flowers in lockdown across Grimethorpe, Shafton and Brierley.
“The reception has been really positive. People have really enjoyed it when I deliver the flowers which is great.
“I know it’s nothing extravagant but anything I can do to bring a smile to people’s faces is enough.”
Luke’s thoughtful acts has earned him a nomination in the Community Hero category at this year’s Proud of Barnsley Awards.
“The nomination is completely unexpected and brilliant. All I aimed to do was cheer people up during a time when people could be feeling lonely.
“I couldn’t imagine having people sit there and stare at four walls all day, so for people to get a small gesture like this – it can make their day.
“I work at Barnsley Hospital as a porter so I see first-hand the selflessness people have for others and wanted to do my bit.
“I want to thank everybody across the community who has shown me support and I hope to continue helping others where I can.”
