THE LEADER of the Penistone Knitting Group has won a regional award for her group’s contribution to Barnsley Hospital and frontline staff.

Sheryll Dixon, leader of the Penistone Knitting Group, has won Yorkshire Water’s Community Hero award after helping more than 200 members of the group donate knits to hospitals.

The group have been knitting blankets for the premature baby unit at Barnsley Hospital, and have now been making mask extenders for workers who are in need of PPE.

Sheryll told We Are Barnsley: “I was so shocked to win. I had no clue I’d even been nominated for it.

“It was such a lovely surprise and for someone to think that much about me to put me forward is amazing.

“I’m always so proud of my knitters and I’m flawed by how many knits we can donate every week.”
