BARNSLEY East MP Stephanie Peacock has joined local councillors to petition against the closure of a town’s last remaining high street bank.
Stephanie met with Wombwell Couns Robert Frost and Brenda Eastwood, as well as Labour candidate James Higginbottom, to discuss Virgin Money’s decision to close its Yorkshire Bank branch on High Street.
The firm cites falling visitor numbers for the closure, one of seven in Yorkshire, as more people choose to bank online.
The closure means that from August there will only be a single bank – Barclays in Hoyland – in the whole of the Barnsley East constituency.
Stephanie said: “The closure of Wombwell’s Yorkshire Bank branch will have a big impact on members of our community who need a local bank branch to go about their daily lives, from local businesses who need to pay in cash on a
regular basis to customers who have mobility issues. This decision should be reviewed immediately.
“I have been in contact with Virgin Money to request a meeting and I will keep pushing for this planned closure to be cancelled.
“Please get in contact with my office if you would like to share how this decision impacts you. I hope the petition will show Virgin Money how important this local service is to our community.”
