BERNESLAI Homes tenants will see their rents increase by almost three per cent from April – the first rise in five years.

The increase – which will see average rents hiked by more than £2 a week – has been put down to changes in the formula by which rents for social housing are set by central government, and the consumer price index.

the housing provider confirmed there will be no increases to any other charges such as heating or water.

Dave Fullen, director of customer and estate services, said: “Over the last few years, rent prices in Barnsley have been reduced – this is the first increase in five years.

“This will see customers rents increase on average by £2.11 per week. All our customers have been contacted by letter.

“Non-residential rents, service and heating charges will remain unchanged for 2020/21.”
