ESSENTIAL repairs costing £900,000 to Cannon Hall’s Georgian roof are set to pick up pace after plans were approved by the council.
In March last year, the council received almost £1m to repair the Grade II*-listed building.
The iconic building, which is home to an outstanding museum collection of fine and decorative art, has been awarded the money by the Museum Estate and Development Fund.
Adaptations and improvements will be made to the roof using the best conservation expertise and will address environment issues by improving insulation.
A planning report said: “The overall condition of Cannon Hall is fair, in line with its ongoing local authority ownership and use as a public museum.
“However, there are a number of maintenance issues, areas of slow decline and fabric reaching the end of its functional life that now need to be addressed.
“The most serious issue relating to high-level water ingress, which is resulting in damage to the historically important fabric internally.”
An application for the work to take place was originally submitted in November, before being given the green light by Barnsley Council’s planning board earlier this week.
