PLANNING ROUND-UP: Planning permission is being sought to convert the upper floors of a town centre building into flats after it became ‘unlikely’ to find a new tenant.
The unit’s ground floor, on Regent Street, is currently a local estate agent branch, with the upper two floors occupied by a recruitment agency. They have stated they are set to terminate their lease agreement in the near future.
This has led to a planning application to be submitted which, if approved, will bring four new flats to the town centre.
A report states: “Despite extensive efforts, it is appears unlikely that a new tenant can be found. The conversion of the upper floors is intended to secure an income from the premises. The extensive basement is utilised for kitchen and toilet facilities.
“The proposals are to retain the existing entrance hallway, as a shared use area.
“The four proposed apartments provide one bedroom accommodation, the arrangement and floor areas are fundamentally determined by the existing walls and staircase. The building is close to the college, and would make ideal student accommodation.”
A total of 46 neighbouring properties have been made aware of the plans with no appeals to date. Public consultation ends on March 7.
A HOME which doubled up as a base for an engineering business without consent has seen action taken by Barnsley Council’s planning enforcement team. The property, on Woodroyd Gardens, Wombwell, required mixed-use planning permission but did not have it. The council gave a two-month period of compliance in order for the owner to cease all commercial activity and remove vehicles, equipment and materials.
PLANNING permission is being sought to remove a hedgerow in Grimethorpe to ensure residents have a clearer view of the miners’ memorial wheel. If approved, work will take place on Brierley Road to improve the view of the monument.
A CHALET which was illegally placed on a site in Birdwell will have to be removed unless an appeal is successful. Set for human habitation, it was sited at Pudding Poke Farm, on Hay Green Lane, without planning permission. The council’s planning enforcement team instructed the landowner to remove the structure in November, given a four-month period of compliance. However, according to a report, the owner issued an appeal with the Planning Inspectorate - which has the power to overrule the council - and the case is awaiting determination.

PLANS to build a 2.4-metre-high fence bordering a Wombwell school for ‘security reasons’ have been approved by the council. The fence at Kings Oak Primary School, on Bondfield Close, will be replaced after plans submitted in December were given the green light earlier this week. Documents show that the school requires more suitable fencing for security reasons – and the current fencing is too low, providing easy access for trespassers.
PLANS to extend a Carlton building used for recycling waste material have been approved. An application for the work to take place on Carlton Road was originally submitted in November.
These plans were given the green light by the council’s planning board last week.
PLANS to erect an agricultural building at a Silkstone farm have been approved by the council. An application for work to take place at Lower Coates Farm, on Blacker Green Lane, was originally submitted in January. These plans were given the green light by the council’s planning board last week.

If approved, house numbers 25 and 27 Millhouses Street will be demolished by the applicant. A total of four detached properties will be built in their place. Eleven neighbouring properties have been made aware of the plans with no appeals to date. Public consultation ends on March 7.
