BARNSLEY author Milly Johnson has paid tribute to her mum following her death at the age of 91 last Thursday.

Janet Hubbard – known as Jenny – lived a fiercely independent life.

Originally from Glasgow, Jenny made the trip down to Barnsley in 1959 following a ‘whirlwind’ romance with her life-long love, Terry.

Milly said: “She met my dad in Butlin’s, Filey, in 1959.

“Five months later they were married and she was moving down to Barnsley.

“She was head over heels with him – it was a proper whirlwind, they were married for 60 years, until my dad died four years ago.”

For many years she worked as a dinner lady in various schools, and was a regular presence at Milly’s events, becoming a fan-favourite with people from all over the world who would regularly send her letters and presents.

Even in her later years, when struggling with Alzheimer’s, Jenny never gave up her independence, and lived in her own home.

“With her latest illness I knew that if she got out of hospital things would have to change, but she bowed out with her independence and quality of life,” Milly added.

“She lived a happy life, a long life, and if there’s such a thing as your mum leaving at the right time, this was it. It’s a massive loss.”
