Barnsley's Palestine Solidarity Campaign took to the streets last weekend to call for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The group were collecting signatures in the town centre for a petition calling for the government to press for a ceasefire.

On Friday night the majority of countries voted for an end to the fighting in Gaza, but the UK government abstained.

Dozens of people were handing out leaflets and wearing Palestinian flags, much to the delight of the group’s secretary Tony Nuttall.

He said: “It was pleasing to see people from all backgrounds coming up to show support for our campaign.

“It has been heartbreaking to see the destruction and death that has been heaped on Palestinians in the Gaza strip.

“Our campaign will carry on giving voice to the demand for peace.

“We are pleased to be part of a movement across the UK and worldwide.

“On Friday in New York more than 200 Jews opposed to Zionism were arrested for occupying Grand Central Station in New York.

“That shows this is not about being for or against Jews, it is against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands.”
