TWO sisters who have been running Macmillan coffee mornings for 13 years have just hosted their most successful yet.

Anna Barron and Sarah Allam, who run the bakery Anna and Sarah’s Cakes and Bakes in Higham, have hosted 14 coffee mornings in total and their popularity has only grown.

Their latest event, at Higham Methodist Church last Saturday, was overflowing with visitors who wanted to help out and taste the wide selection of cakes, with a total of £2,360 raised for the cancer support charity.

Anna said: “It was a really good day – the best ever.

“We were meant to start at 9.30am, but before that it was packed with people queuing for cake.

“We had a steady flow of people since then and ended up selling out of everything.”

Already thinking about their next fundraiser, the sisters realised that they will have to bake plenty more cakes, especially carrot cake which was a firm favourite.

The day also included a Great Higham Bake Off, which was won by Penny Harper with her ‘Mars Attacks’ cheesecake.

“We were worried people wouldn’t get involved this year because of the cost-of-living crisis,” Anna added.

“It turns out people were more generous than ever.

“People keep putting envelopes with money through my door if they couldn’t attend – we’ve got such a kind natured community.

“We want to say thank you to everyone who came and helped out – it’s a team effort and we couldn’t do this alone.”
