TWO Worsbrough councillors held an urgent meeting with police officers last week after becoming ‘seriously concerned’ following two stabbings in their ward.
Labour Couns Roy Bowser and John Clarke, who both represent the Worsbrough ward, asked the police for the meeting on Monday to address their concerns.
Last month, a man was stabbed near to the Asda supermarket on Thomas Street – and 25-year-old George Caldararu was charged with section 18 assault and possession of a bladed article in a public place.
Then, earlier this month, Carl Dixon was fatally stabbed in Worsbrough – with Daniel Cheetham, 25, of Underwood Avenue, and 24-year-old Liam Shaw, of no fixed abode, both charged with his murder.
A 44-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been bailed pending further enquiries.
A 45-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man also arrested on suspicion of murder have been released with no further action.
Coun Bowser said: “There’s been a death and one other serious stabbing incident in recent weeks in our own back yard of Worsbrough.
“Coun Clarke and I are seriously concerned so we therefore contacted the police asking for an urgent meeting.
“We met last Monday with Inspector Rebecca Richardson.
“We were subsequently assured that the general public should not be over-concerned.
“It’s happened here and so we’ve asked for another meeting with the police where the general public can attend.”
Coun Clarke added: “We’ve been assured that the two incidents are not connected and they’re isolated.
“We want to let people know that the police are taking things seriously.”
