THE completion of Wombwell High Street’s transformation has been lauded by local councillors – and other village centres are set to follow suit thanks to a multi-million pound investment scheme.
The £35m Principal Towns project – which targets high footfall areas such as Wombwell, Cudworth, Royston and Penistone in order to boost local economies – is picking up pace.
The works, which began in March, include pavement improvements to both sides of the high street, resurfacing of the road, anchor points and power points for the market and new seating, litter bins and planters.
“We’ve already invested £5m into our six Principal Towns and ten Local Centres to help them thrive. We have plans to invest another £30m into our local high streets across the borough, and we’re working to attract even more from other funding bodies.”
Coun Robert Frost, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, who is also a local Wombwell councillor, said: “I’m delighted to see the high-quality improvements to the High Street which I know are really welcomed by local residents and businesses.
“Our Principal Towns investment work is all about services and teams across the council working together to help each of our local village centres grow as places where people choose to live, work and visit.
“This project has been a great example of the way we’ve co-ordinated our highway maintenance programme alongside all the improvements to the street scene – it has given our high street a much-needed facelift.”
