TRIBUTES have poured in after a man died following a collision with an ambulance in Hoylandswaine.

Shaun Jackson, 31, of Bolton-upon-Dearne died after the accident at 10.25pm on the A628 Barnsley Road, near to the Lord Nelson pub.

Shaun, a scooter rider, was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries.

The driver from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service is assisting officers with enquiries.

However, they are still appealing for any information about the incident, and are urging residents to get in touch.

A spokesperson said: “We would particularly like to speak to anyone on Barnsley Road at the time who may have seen the collision, or anyone driving along either of the two Barnsley Roads who may have caught the collision on a dash camera.

“We are also appealing to any premises that has CCTV cameras which cover the junction to check their footage and see if those cameras caught the collision.

“You can pass information to police via our online live chat, our online portal or by calling 101.

“Please quote incident number 1232 of July 28 2023 when you get in touch.”

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust have offered their condolences to the family.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that an ambulance on its way to an emergency was involved in a road traffic collision with a scooter at around 10.25pm on Friday night on the A628 Barnsley Road, Hoylandswaine.

“The male scooter rider sustained serious injuries and was conveyed to hospital, but very sadly died.

“First and foremost, our thoughts are with the man’s family at this very difficult time.

“We are working with the police to help with their investigation into the cause of the collision.”

Bradley French, one of Shaun’s closest friends, helped arrange a vigil at the weekend and more than 100 people turned up to support their late friend.

He has also set up a fundraiser in Shaun’s memory – and more than £6,500 has already been raised.

Bradley said: “He was everyone’s ‘go to man’.

“He was a problem solver and just a general top boy – he’s left a big hole in our hearts.

“I’m only doing this to try and bring some sort of peace of mind to Shaun’s family.

“We want to raise as much as we can and then the money can be passed onto his family.

“Whether it’s to help with funeral costs, his beautiful daughter’s bank account or a memorial bench – the list can carry on.

“Shaun loved the pound sign like no other – so let’s try and get him one last wage in.”

Hundreds of people have taken to social media to offer their condolences to the family, including Coun Alex Burnett of Penistone East.

He said: “This is dreadful news. My sincere condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.

“I urge anyone on Barnsley Road at the time who may have seen the collision, or anyone driving along either of the two Barnsley Roads who may have caught the collision to contact South Yorkshire Police as soon as possible.”
