A SPONSORED karate event raised nearly £8,000 for charity.

Hosted at both Honeywell Sports Centre and Penistone Karate Club, the event saw karate enthusiasts perform 20 punches and 20 kicks per minute for an hour.

The money raised is being split 50-50 between the clubs and charities including Barnsley Hospice, BIADS, and St Thomas’ Church, as well as several others.

Instructor of Barnsley Karate Centre, John Tumman, said: “The punches were relatively easy, but the kicks were very difficult.

“To finish both punches and kicks, with a rest period of only 60 seconds, meant that some students were nearly non-stop for an hour.

“The people who take part in these events are amazing, as are the kind people who donate, giving back to people less fortunate than themselves.

“It’s a truly humbling experience to see our Barnsley communities coming together to help others.”
