A DEMENTIA support group operating across Barnsley has become one of five groups in Yorkshire in the running for a share of £250,000 of national funding.
Julie Brown, founder of Barnsley Butterflies Dementia Support and Activities Group which has been running for nine years said that the funding would secure its long-term future.
“We’ve won quite a few awards previously but nothing like this has ever happened so it’s amazing,” she said.
“We hold three groups across the borough at Barugh Green Club, Boatman’s Rest in Worsbrough and another at East Dene Working Men’s Club on Doncaster Road.
“We also work with Barnsley Museums in their Learning Lab on a Thursday, and offer a support group.
“A lot of our sessions tend to be entertainment and music-based so it’s nice to be able to offer a bit of a variety.”
Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis added: “Butterflies do incredible work and go above and beyond to provide support and respite for those living with dementia.
“The charity has brought people together at the most difficult time in their lives, tackling social isolation and creating a support network for carers.
“Since it was founded, Butterflies has touched the lives of many people across our region.
“I want to thank Julie and her team for all that thy continue to do for carers and people living with dementia.
“I know local resident are incredibly appreciative of all their efforts.
“I would encourage everyone to vote for the charity and support their bid to win this much-deserved funding.”
