A FUNDRAISING hero is taking part in another challenge today in a bid to raise more funds for the town’s hospice.
Gavin Coles, of Darley Avenue, Athersley South, has raised about £48,000 over the last five years, donating the money to Barnsley Hospice.
The 44-year-old, who has twice been nominated for the Proud of Barnsley awards for his fundraising efforts, has completed a number of challenges over the years, with a charity duathlon coming up in September.
He also cycled a near-900-mile route from Land’s End to John O’Groats in Scotland, as well as undertaking the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in July 2021.
Today, Gavin, his wife and his children, will be taking part in a sponsored cycle, raising money and awareness for the hospice, as well as having a tombola.
Gavin said: “I’m just happy to give back to a place that helped my family when they needed it.
“I also love doing things for the Barnsley community – town folk are amazing when it comes to community spirit.
“I believe the staff of the hospice are true heroes and if I can help raise awareness and a bit of cash for them, I’ll try my hardest to do it.”
