CHRISTMAS is the time when we feast ourselves on our favourite treats – but did you know they can be toxic to dogs?

Aquapaws Canine Hydrotherapy, Barnsley, has released a list of some common human foods that are toxic to your canine best friend.

Chocolate contains theobromine which can cause kidney failure, and avocado contains persin which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs.

Also onions, garlic, and chives can cause gastrointestinal irritation and red blood cell damage and corn on the cob can block your dog's intestine which can be fatal.

Grapes and raisins can cause severe liver damage and kidney failure, and alcohol, as well as causing sickness, can also damage the central nervous system.

Finally, it may be tempting to give your dog some meat on the bone – but cooked bones pose a splinter risk and can cause constipation and, in extreme cases, can perforate the gut which can cause a fatality.

If your dog has consumed any of these items, please phone your vet immediately.
