THE FIRST community fridge was launched last week – which can help to tackle food waste and support those who need extra help to access food.

It was set up by the council with support from The Co-op and environmental charity, Hubbub.

The community fridge is open to everyone in the Darton East community to donate or access fresh food that would otherwise go to waste.

The Co-op will also donate surplus food from its stores.

Coun Jenny Platts, cabinet spokesperson for adults and communities, said: “Community Fridges are a wonderful concept and we’re delighted to launch the first community fridge in Barnsley.

“Everyone in our communities is welcome to get involved, whether by donating or receiving food, or helping out with volunteering at the fridge.

“This is a fantastic initiative to encourage our communities to come together, support and learn from one another.”

It can be found at Mapplewell and Staincross Village Hall.
