AS today marks Bonfire Night, residents are being urged to remain safe while enjoying the festivities.

The emergency service has encouraged people to attend organised displays – which are often more safe and can be more spectacular than at-home displays.

However, if you are having a firework display at home make sure you only use fireworks from genuine suppliers.

You should point them away from trees and properties and never to back to them once they are lit.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Having a bonfire? Keep it small, please. Size really does matter with these things.

“And if you are having one, never leave them unattended, make sure you have buckets of water ready to extinguish if needed and don't use petrol or other accelerants to get them going.”
