RESIDENTS and families keen to get outdoors will be encouraged by a raft of improvement works to a Wombwell footpath.

Set to start before the end of the year, the works on the path between Lundhill Road and Wentworth View, near Hillies Golf Course, will include resurfacing and accessibility improvements.

Dropped kerbs will be installed in the car park, while on Wentworth View a new ramp will be created.

Environmental work will also take place to form bee habitats and wildflower areas.

Coun Chris Lamb, cabinet spokesperson for place (environment and transport), said: “The much-needed improvements to the public footpath between Lundhill Road and Wentworth View in Wombwell will make a huge difference for families and residents using it for leisure and access to amenities.

“Reusing material lifted from the existing path for wildlife projects rather than disposing of it in a landfill provides additional habitats and wider environmental benefits associated with reduced transport needs, including less pollution and congestion from vehicles.

“I would like to thank local volunteers for their continued involvement in this project and supporting our ambition for a sustainable Barnsley.

“Volunteers play a key role in our communities and help to improve and look after our wonderful borough for future generations.”
