THE Glass Works has been crowned the winner of the prestigious Regeneration award - beating seven other projects from across the UK.
The multimillion pound town centre regeneration scheme took the accolade at The Planning Awards last week after a diverse panel of 20 judges made the decision.
They said that the scheme was a ‘great example of how strategic development and targeted investment can play a huge part in revitalising a local economy’.
Coun Tim Cheetham, cabinet spokesperson for place, said: “We are grateful and unbelievably proud to see The Glass Works win this year’s Planning Award for Regeneration.
“To go up against some truly outstanding developments from across the country and come out on top is a huge achievement.
“It is a success for the council, the project team involved, and of course, the people of Barnsley who make our town so great.
“The award is recognition that the council, our development partner Queensberry and principal contractor Henry Boot Construction, are delivering something truly significant and important for Barnsley.
“The Glass Works is helping us create a more dynamic and sustainable town centre environment that meets the needs of our residents, businesses and visitors.
“It is built upon Barnsley’s strong traditions and sense of community and provides a modern, accessible and inviting destination for all.”
