THE deputy mayor of Barnsley attend Sunday’s Superjam event which helped to raise awareness of Dementia Awareness Week.

The former mayor of Barnsley, Coun Pauline Markham attended the event which was held virtually.

She said: "It was a pleasure to be invited to attend another SuperJam event. It is a real shame that it was virtual and I was unable to meet everyone in person.

“In the past, whilst being Mayor of Barnsley I was lucky and had the chance to attend a few of these events and I cannot express enough how fantastic and valuable they are for everyone.

“Dementia is a disease close to my heart having witnessed and nursed both my mother and uncle through the tragic and sometimes heart-breaking times that it brings.

“With my mum, she rapidly went from a very independent and mild-mannered lady to someone who was frustrated, aggressive and violent - eventually not recognising myself or any of the family. For me and my family, this was devastating.

“Back then, there was little support available for us to understand the decline in her health and behaviours. Groups such as the Great Get Together Superjam - along with all the amazing charities, provide invaluable support that is crucial in keeping everyone active.”
