CONCERNS have been raised for the safety of nesting swans at a Bolton-upon-Dearne nature site following reports of illegal off-road bikers disrupting the wildlife.

This week, two swans began to nest in a ditch next to the path at Adwick Washlands.

Local walkers raised their concerns about the swans’ safety and reports of illegal bikers coming ‘dangerously close’ to the birds’ nest.

Emma Tuckey, senior site manager, urged the public to take care when passing the nest and has reiterated that off-road vehicles are prohibited at the site.

She said: “A pair of swans has decided to nest in the ditch next to the path, we’re asking people to take care as they pass and keep dogs on leads.

“Off-road vehicles are not permitted on the footpaths through or around the washlands, they will undoubtedly be causing disturbance to the nesting swans as well as a nuisance to other people enjoying the site responsibly.

“We ask that if people see off-road vehicles being used to report them to the police on the non-emergency number 101.”
