FIREFIGHTERS have stressed the importance of leaving doors closed overnight by sharing photos of a fire-damaged home.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue shared the images on Facebook to help show how a fire can be contained by simply closing the door.

A spokesperson from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Having internal doors closed, even glazed in this case, can dramatically stop the spread of fire and smoke.

“This gives you more time to escape, should fire hit, and also means damage to your home is more limited.

“That's exactly what happened in this case, where a family safely escaped a fire in Barnsley and the blaze was limited to a kitchen.”
