THE council has backed its town centre wardens which comes following the alleged assault of a worker whilst on duty last week.

Wesley Gummerson, 59, of Barnsley Road, was charged following an alleged assault after the warden called for assistance from the Barnsley Central Neighbourhood Team at 2.30pm last Tuesday.

Gummerson has been charged with common assault and bailed to next appear in court on June 17.

A spokesperson for Barnsley Council said: “As a resident of Barnsley you have the right to expect the best service from the council and we try to provide that service politely and respectfully.

“Following an incident last week where a member of our staff was physically assaulted, we would like to remind you that we expect the same from you.

“Our staff reserve the right to ask anyone who is violent and/or aggressive, either verbally or physically, to leave the premises, withdraw services (if the situation allows) or end abusive phone calls.

“We will fully support any of our staff who have been subjected to aggression or violence and anyone committing this should expect to be prosecuted.”
