BIN collection days have been rescheduled over the Christmas period and Barnsley residents have been urged to double-check to avoid being caught out.

Bins that are scheduled to be collected on Christmas Day and New Year's Day will be rescheduled.

Homes in Mapplewell will have their grey bin collected on December 23 and some homes in the town centre will have their grey bin collected on December 21.

The last bin collection before Christmas for some residents in Wombwell will be the brown bin on Christmas Eve.

Coun Chris Lamb, cabinet spokesperson for environment and transportation, said: "We understand how celebrations at this time of year can create more waste than usual.

“To help keep the borough clean and green, we're encouraging residents to be responsible with their festive waste and continue to recycle where possible. Barnsley has already shown that it's fantastic at recycling, but reducing and reusing our waste is important too."

"Our waste and recycling sites based throughout the borough will also be open as normal over the festive period, apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, for any additional waste or recycling.”
