A BUSINESS owner from Mapplewell hopes people continue to look after their local community during the lockdown - as his family help to plant 500 daffodil bulbs along a public footpath.

Jay Ashton, the owner of Bottle & Co, based at Greenside, believes he cannot encourage residents to shop locally without doing his bit for the community.

This week, Jay and his family, helped to plant around 500 bulbs along Carr Green Lane towards Spark Lane with the help of the Greenspace Group.

This is part of Greenspace’s project to plant 10,000 bulbs across the borough.

Jay told We Are Barnsley: “We’ve been in Mapplewell for 18 months and really wanted to become part of the community.

“We’ve always been keen to help out and volunteer and took this as an opportunity to help other proactive people in our fantastic area.

“I hope that these bulbs will help spruce up the public footpath and become really impressive walkway.

“I think it’s so important to not only live somewhere, but be an active part of the area.

“We really enjoyed our time planting as a family and encourage others to do the same.

“Thanks to Greenspace Group for their support with this.”

Anyone who can help out should contact Greenspace on social media and a member should be able to drop off the bags of bulbs in a socially distanced manner.
