A NEW walking football club aimed at men over 50 has nearly doubled its amount of players following a successful first game.
Barnsley Age UK and Paul Kay of Wombwell Main have teamed up to launch the club’s first ever walking football team.
Since first kick off, the group has grown from 13 to 21 new players in the space of a week.
Tracy Hughes, social inclusion worker at Age UK, has been thrilled with the reaction and hopes the club will encourage more men over the age of 50 to get active and socialise.
She told We Are Barnsley: “The attendance numbers grew this Saturday to an amazing 21 members.
“I do think the improvements in fitness levels will grow and we all know how those ‘feel-good’ endorphins work so well for us.
“This really has been such a huge hit in only two weeks, and I do hope it will continue to grow.
“The camaraderie is quite brilliant, in fact I stood on the touchline and had the best hour of the week.
“Anyone is welcome to come down and watch, but of course, if you’re over 50 and would like to join in you’d be more than welcome to come along be a part of the Wombwell Main Walking Football Team.”
The team’s next game will kick off this Saturday at 10am at Wombwell Main.
