AN INITIATIVE that helped to encourage people across the borough to incorporate regular activity in their daily lives has helped the public to stay active during the coronavirus pandemic.

The What's Your Move campaign was launched by Barnsley Council on May 1 and provided fun ideas to help keep families active during the summer months.

More than 10,000 copies of the summer challenge booklet were distributed across the borough and trails were created to help families to explore their local area.

Table tennis packs were also delivered in partnership with the council area teams and Ping! Table Tennis England.

Coun Jim Andrews, cabinet spokesperson for public health, said: “We know the last four months have been difficult for many of our residents, but lots of people have seen benefits to their mental and physical well-being by being more active every day.

“Physical activity doesn’t necessarily mean going running or doing intense workouts; it could be going for a walk or doing tasks around the house and garden.

“The creativity and enthusiasm we’ve seen across the borough has been amazing, and I want to encourage people to keep going during the autumn and winter months.”
